Third OHSEI Theme Conference

On 5-7 November 2003 OHSEI will conduct its third Theme Conference. This Conference, deferred from 2002, deals with important issues facing Global Unions especially here in Asia.

Why occupational disease?

•  ILO estimates of fatalities from occupational accidents and diseases suggest that as man as 2.3 million workers each year, are killed by their work.
•  It is thought that more than 80% of these deaths occur in Asia. Most are preventable.
•  The ILO estimates that for every death from accidents there are more than four from occupational disease.
•  The ILO Schedule of occupational diseases includes 78 occupational disease causes. Many countries have much smaller compensatable Schedules. When the Schedules are small, prevention strategies receive less attention.
•  The cost of death, lost time, treatment and disability from occupational accidents and diseases is estimated at between 3% and 4% of GDP.
