The JILAF Participant Oriented Safety
Improvements through Trade union InitiatiVE
(POSITIVE) program developed and popularised an inspection
checklist to be used for general checking of the workplace.
It can be used in conjunction with the ILO WISE (Work
Improvement in Small Enterprises) programs.
The JILAF POSITIVE checklist has been adapted and used
in OHSEI's training programs. Go to (insert URL). One
of the adaptations is to insert several words about
whether the workplace has policies and procedures dealing
with occupational health and safety, and whether it
has a joint occupational health, safety and environment
committee.
Training strategies for inspection practices
Ideally, after the checklist has been introduced to
the participants an inspection of a real workplace can
be arranged. Usually this includes an opportunity for
the employer to discuss the occupational health and
safety situation including policies, procedures, actions
to control hazards, etc. Where a workplace inspection
is not possible the training room may provide some possibilities
(one General secretary was a bit embarrassed by the
number of hazards identified around the union office).
Alternatively OHSEI has been collecting examples of
drawings and photos to allow participants in small groups
to use the Inspection Checklist to identify and control
hazards in the drawings. Go
to drawings.
