Study Missions

Bangladesh
OHSEI plans a study mission to Bangladesh to work with trade unions and BILS to develop project ideas for the future. The mission will involve meetings with unions, government and labour NGOs and a two day workshop to develop policies to respond to the serious occupational health and safety situation in Bangladesh. One response may be to develop training for trade union representatives in negotiating clauses on OHSE and handling OSH grievances. The Bangladesh Factories Act is still 'old model' (see below) legislation.

Cambodia
The OHSEI study mission to Cambodia will have similar objectives to that for Bangladesh. An LO-FTF funded ILO project has been operating for some time. A number of trainers have been conducting collective bargaining and grievance handling training. Training for trade union representatives in negotiating clauses on OHSE and handling OSH grievances area likely result of the mission and workshop.

India
The Indian contribution to the world wide annual work related fatalities (estimated by ILO at up to 2.3 million) is considerable. The situation in the coal mining industry is of particular concern. The OHSEI study mission to India will focus on this industry, in one State. It is hoped that this will give OHSEI an effective entry point to a nation with huge occupational health and safety problems.
