OHSEI
working with its member organisations
OHSEI is rapidly building its regional focus. Since
the beginning of October it has conducted training in
Thailand with PSI and
IFBWW and has conducted an advanced course for trainers
in Bangladesh.
OHSEI Columns
Editors of union newsletters! Check the
OHSEI Column if you have a little space to fill.
You will find a number of half page items dealing with
OHSEI issues. For example, Columns 4-11 are a series
explaining the OHSEI Hazard Management Strategy.
The OHSEI Hazard Management Strategy puts PPE last behind
risk assessment, engineering and administrative controls,
and training.
Training
OHSEI materials for study circles/discussion groups.
Visit the
OHSEI website to see some materials developed to
assist union trainers/activists to lead study circles/discussion
groups with union members. The first Discussion leader's
Guide introduces the issue of Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE).
Although OHSEI always stresses that PPE is a last
resort, it is necessary in many situations. The Guide
helps us to understand how to ensure that union members
know that failure to wear PPE when a hazard has been
identified means that the worker is exposed to the hazard.
Too often we simply refuse to wear the PPE because it
is too uncomfortable.

Study missions
In addition OHSEI will conduct study missions and
workshops to develop further regional activities
in Bangladesh,
Cambodia
and India
during December 2002.
Handling hazards
Typically those responsible for eliminating and controlling
hazards use a hierarchy of controls. OHSEI has built
its training around one such hierarchy.
