AVIAN
FLU – HOW SERIOUS IS THE OUTBREAK
New outbreaks in poultry in Asia of
avian influenza strain H5N1 began in late June 2004.
Countries affected include: Cambodia, China, Indonesia,
Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Since May 2005
outbreaks have occurred amongst poultry populations in
Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Romania. In
October 2005 suspected cases were found in Greece.
Between December 26, 2003 and October 10, 2005, 117
people have been infected with avian influenza strain
H5N1. Almost all of the cases were due to contact
with infected birds. Sixty of the 117 infected
people died from the disease. All of these
deaths have occurred in Southeast Asian countries,
majority from among poultry workers. http://www.utsa.edu/safety/safety.htm,

HIV-AIDS
INFORMATION FOR WORKERS
HIV has
imperiled the very fabric of human society as no disease
in human history has before. By 2010, it is estimated
that deaths from the pandemic will rival those of the
bubonic plague, which killed 93 million people.
