International Workers' Memorial Day: 28 April
Mourn the dead but fight for the living demonstrates the focus of trade union activities on or about 28 April each year. 28 April is a recognised day in a number of countries and the number of trade unions taking up the cry grows each year. Go to article.

OHSEI re-registered
After long delay OHSEI has been re-registered under Thai legislation covering International NGOs. The two-year registration ends in December 2004.

The second Annual Regional Trainer training in Occupational health, safety and environment just concluded
In February 2003 OHSEI received support from the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), the LO-TCO (Sweden) and LO-FTF to conduct its first Regional Trainer training in Occupational health, safety and environment course. Fourteen participants (two females) attended (see article in OHSEI Newsletter No. 7). 
Eighteen participants (five females) attended the 2004 course conducted from 7-19 March at OHSEI's facilities in Bangkok. On this occasion support was from the CLC and the ILO. Go to article.

Taking care of your union's staff
Every union office has to be cleaned. We should expect the same care in selecting and using appropriate cleaning materials to clean the union office as for any other employer. Taking responsibility for the appropriate choice of cleaning materials is important for the health of union staff and cleaners. Go to article.

Why is a safe and healthy workplace not a fundamental International Labour Standard?
In May 1995, following the ILO's 75th Anniversary and the discussions in the World Summit on Social Development, a campaign for the ratification of eight fundamental Conventions was launched by the Director-General of the ILO. C155, the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No. 155) was not one of them. The nine principles of the UN Global Compact are also silent on occupational health and safety. Properly Trained Workers Report Less Pain

While training and proper equipment both have an important role in workplace ergonomics, a new study indicates that, if reducing pain is the goal, a combination of both factors might be the best way to achieve success. Go to article.

Downsizing comes with big health risks 
Employees just can't win. First comes the anxiety of losing your job, then the stress of added workload after keeping your job, and then the stress of feeling so stressed-out, which causes stressful health problems. Go to article.

More workplace inspection checklists
For some time OHSEI has been using an inspection checklist based upon the POSITIVE checklist developed by JILAF and ILO. It has now identified several other checklists for textile and clothing workers, for education unions, and for construction workers. Go to article.
